Chapter 8

Mark

Alicia wasn’t answering his calls and probably wasn’t even reading his texts. It’d been almost two weeks since Mark had last seen her, and he couldn’t believe how much a woman he’d seen twice could torture him—in the daytime, as well as during the night where he hoped to escape her haunts, but simultaneously looked forward to seeing her again, even if just in some dream.

In all his fantasies and visions of her, she was distinctly herself—not like Lydia at all. Despite their physical similarities and expressions, Alicia had a markedly different personality, the vibrancy of which he missed.

He’d gotten a strong “soul” impression of her when they met—as if he’d almost immediately plugged into what made her tick. He felt like he knew her, despite what little he knew of her. And it wasn’t just his daughter falling in love with her that made him see the parts of her easy to fall in love with.

He was sure if Alicia had never seen that photo, things would’ve progressed quickly between them; there was no doubting the mutual attraction, and he knew she’d come around to what he wanted, what Amy wanted. He had a feeling he’d know exactly which buttons to push, and that Alicia would be helpless against his machinations and charms. He had no problem with falling into a spell with her—as she fell over the edge of the inevitable amorous cliff, his arms would be wrapped tightly around her.

As time passed, Mark eventually became unsure of what he’d actually sensed of Alicia versus what he had dreamed up when she came to him in daydreams, thoughts, and memories.

When a text suddenly showed up from her, for a moment he wondered if he’d dreamed that up as well. I need to see you. We have to talk about something.

Mark blinked his eyes and read the text again, his heart racing. Should he call her to sort out the details? Clearly, they were going to talk about the two of them, or Amy, or all three—what else would it be?

He stared at his phone, nervous and undecided, fearful of screwing up.

While still fighting the desire to call, another text showed up. Are you available this weekend?

Yes, he replied. Whatever works for you is fine with me. Check with Georgia.

It felt like an eternity before she came back to him with details. Since she proposed an evening meeting, he offered up a restaurant he thought she might like.

Sure, she agreed after a few agonizing moments. I’ll meet you there.

His heart fell. He would have loved to pick her up and get a glimpse of where she lived and have a little more insight into her life. Meeting somewhere felt so formal—which, obviously, she wanted. For now, anyway. All that mattered was that he had an opening.

He couldn’t believe his luck. In just two days, he’d see her again.

Friday couldn’t come soon enough.
